Is it true that the prophet ﷺ gave instruction to cover containers that have food and drink in them (when left overnight)?
Yes, when the Muslim goes to sleep, it is not permissible for them to leave vessels, or saucepans, that still have food or drink uncovered. If they put these things in the fridge, I would hope that this suffices.
Covering vessels at night is obligatory and an action that is better for the Muslim in their religion and their everyday life. The authentic ahadeeth that state this are clear. Muslim reported in his Saheeh that the prophet ﷺ said, ‘Cover vessels and waterskins and close the doors and extinguish the lamps, for Shaytaan does not loosen the waterskin, open the door or uncover the vessels…’. And in another hadeeth, also reported by Muslim, he ﷺ said, ‘Cover the vessels and tie the waterskin, for there is a night in the year when pestilence descends, and it does not pass an uncovered vessel or an untied waterskin but some of that pestilence descending into it.’
And perhaps there is in this hidden medical knowledge that doctors are not able to understand but they made do one day. Perhaps this is a way in which new diseases come about.
And the prophet ﷺ emphasised this strongly by saying, ‘And if one amongst you fails to find (something) to cover it well, he should cover it by placing (a piece of) wood across it, if they are able to and mention Allaah’s name upon it.’
This is better for the Muslim for them in the present and the future and in current life and the Hereafter. And Allaah knows best.
نعم، الأصل في المسلم إن بات فلا يجوز له أن يترك الآنية التي فيها الشراب ، أو الصحاف التي فيها الطعام إلا وهي مغطاة . ولو وضع في الثلاجة فأرجو أن تكون بمثابة الغطاء.
وتغطية الإناء ليلاً واجب ، وهذا خير للمسلم في دينه ودنياه والأحاديث الصحيحة صريحة في ذلك . فقد أخرج مسلم في صحيحه أن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم قال : {غطوا الإناء وأوكوا السقاء وأغلقوا الباب ، وأطفئوا السراج ؛ فإن الشيطان لا يحل سقاء ولا يفتح باباً ولا يكشف إناء ……} وفي حديث آخر في مسلم أيضاً يقول صلى الله عليه وسلم : { غطوا الإناء، وأوكوا السقاء ؛ فإن في السنة ليلة ينزل فيها وباء، لا يمر بإناء ليس عليه غطاء، أو سقاء ليس عليه وكاء، إلا نزل فيه من ذلك الوباء} ولعل في هذا سراً عجز عنه الأطباء، ولعلهم يعرفونه في يوم من الأيام. ولعل هذا سبب لحصول الداء في أول أمره، الذي لم يكن قد عرف من قبل.
وقد أكد النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم، على هذا الأمر تأكيداً شديداً، فقال: {فإن لم يجد أحدكم إلا أن يعرض على إنائه عوداً ، ويذكر اسم الله فليفعل } وهذا خير للمسلم في الحال والمآل، والمعاش والمعاد ، والله أعلم .✍
